How Much Does a Wedding Celebrant Cost in Sydney?
If you’re planning a wedding, you’ll probably have a long list of things to budget for — venue, photographer, flowers, music, food and everything in between. So it’s completely reasonable to ask: how much does a wedding celebrant cost?
The short answer is that celebrant fees can vary quite a bit depending on the celebrant, the location, the type of ceremony, what’s included and the level of support you want before and on your wedding day.
The short answer
Eliza McAllister’s wedding celebrant fees currently start at $1,000. The set fee covers the celebrant services and inclusions you need throughout your wedding journey, including ceremony planning, a personalised ceremony, vow guidance, legal paperwork, on-the-day support and professional PA equipment. An Official Marriage Certificate is an optional additional cost.
Rather than simply comparing one price against another, I think it’s much more helpful to look at what you’re actually getting for your celebrant fee. Your celebrant isn’t just someone who stands at the front and says a few words. They are the person guiding one of the most important parts of your wedding day.
Eliza’s advice
Don’t choose your celebrant on price alone. Look at what is included, how much support you’ll receive, how personalised the ceremony will be and, perhaps most importantly, whether you actually feel comfortable with the person who will marry you.
01
How much does a wedding celebrant cost in Sydney?
There isn’t one standard wedding celebrant fee across Sydney or NSW. Celebrants set their own fees, and the price can vary depending on the type of ceremony, location, experience and what’s included.
For my own wedding celebrant service, fees currently start at $1,000. I offer a set fee rather than asking couples to add up lots of separate extras. The fee covers the celebrant services and inclusions you need to create a personalised wedding ceremony, manage the legal requirements and feel supported throughout the planning process.
You can view my current celebrant fees and inclusions for the full details.
You may also come across celebrants offering a legals-only service, while a full wedding celebrant service with extensive planning, a personalised ceremony and on-the-day support will generally involve a different level of service.
A useful distinction
When comparing celebrants, don’t just ask, “How much do you charge?” Ask, “What is included in that fee, and what would we need to pay extra for?”
02
What are you actually paying a celebrant for?
A wedding ceremony might only take 10, 20 or 30 minutes, but the work behind it is much more than the time spent standing in front of your guests. If you’d like to know more about how long a wedding ceremony actually takes, I’ve written more about that separately.
Depending on the celebrant you choose, your fee may cover:
- Initial consultation: getting to know you both and making sure you’re comfortable with your choice of celebrant.
- Legal paperwork: preparing and managing the documentation required to legally marry you.
- Ceremony planning: helping you decide what you want your ceremony to look and feel like.
- Personalised ceremony writing: creating a ceremony that reflects your relationship rather than using a generic script.
- Vow guidance: helping you with your vows if you want to write your own.
- Rehearsal or talk-through: making sure everyone knows what is happening before the day.
- On-the-day preparation: arriving early, checking the ceremony space and helping things run smoothly.
- Sound equipment: some celebrants provide their own PA, microphone and ceremony music equipment.
- Post-ceremony paperwork: lodging the required marriage documentation after your ceremony.
Not every celebrant includes all of these things, which is why it’s worth asking for a clear list of inclusions before you book.

Why do wedding celebrants charge different amounts?
There are several reasons one celebrant may charge more than another. It doesn’t automatically mean one is better — it simply means you need to understand what you’re comparing.
Experience
An experienced celebrant has usually conducted many different ceremonies and knows how to handle the things you can’t always plan for — nervous couples, unexpected weather, late arrivals, microphone problems, changes to the running order and all the little moments that can happen on a wedding day.
You’re paying for more than someone who can legally conduct the ceremony. You’re also paying for experience and confidence when it matters.
Location and travel
A celebrant may include travel within their normal service area, while travel outside that area may attract an additional fee. If you’re getting married somewhere further away, ask about travel costs before booking so there are no surprises later. You can see the areas where I conduct wedding ceremonies across Sydney and NSW.
How personalised the ceremony is
There is a big difference between a short legal ceremony and a ceremony that has been written specifically for you.
If your celebrant spends time getting to know you, talking through your relationship, helping with vows and writing a ceremony around the two of you, that work forms an important part of what you’re paying for. You can learn more about my personalised wedding ceremonies if you’d like to see how I approach this.
What’s included in the package
Some celebrants offer a simple base fee and then charge extra for things such as rehearsals, travel, PA equipment or additional meetings. Others prefer to offer a more comprehensive set fee. Neither approach is necessarily wrong — just make sure you understand it.
04
What should be included in a celebrant fee?
Before comparing celebrant prices, I’d recommend asking each celebrant exactly what their fee includes.
At a minimum, I would want to understand:
- How many meetings are included?
- Is the ceremony personally written for you?
- Can you contact the celebrant throughout the planning process?
- Is a rehearsal or ceremony talk-through included?
- Is travel included?
- Is a PA and microphone provided?
- Does the celebrant handle the legal paperwork?
- Are there any additional fees?
- What happens if your wedding date changes?
A little tip from me
I think transparent pricing makes wedding planning much easier. You should be able to understand what you’re paying for without having to work out a complicated list of optional extras.
05
What does Eliza’s celebrant fee include?
I believe your celebrant should be there for much more than the few minutes you’re standing at the front of your ceremony.
My approach is to offer a set celebrant fee that covers the support you need throughout your wedding journey, rather than making you add up lots of separate extras.
My wedding celebrant fees currently start at $1,000. My current celebrant fee includes:
- Unlimited contact throughout your wedding planning journey.
- A comprehensive planning guide with ideas, suggestions and practical advice.
- A personalised ceremony created around the two of you.
- Vow and ceremony guidance whenever you need it.
- A pre-wedding talk-through or rehearsal if required.
- On-the-day support, including arriving early and helping everything run smoothly.
- Professional portable PA and microphone equipment, including ceremony music if required.
- Legal paperwork management and lodgement.
- A commemorative marriage certificate presented on your wedding day.
- Post-ceremony follow-up after you’ve officially become a married couple.

06
Should you choose the cheapest celebrant?
Price is obviously an important part of your wedding budget, but I wouldn’t recommend choosing your celebrant based on price alone.
Think about it this way: your celebrant is the person who will be standing beside you during one of the most personal parts of your wedding day. They will hear your story, help shape your ceremony, guide you through the legal requirements and then conduct the ceremony itself.
When you’re comparing celebrants, look at:
- Experience: How many weddings have they conducted?
- Personality: Do you feel relaxed and comfortable with them?
- Communication: Will they be available when you have questions?
- Personalisation: Will your ceremony actually sound like you?
- Inclusions: What are you getting for the quoted price?
- Professionalism: Do they seem organised, responsive and prepared?
My biggest piece of advice
Meet your celebrant before you book. You don’t need to know exactly what you want your ceremony to look like yet. A good initial conversation should help you work that out together.
07
When should you book your wedding celebrant?
Once you’ve chosen your date and venue, I’d recommend starting your celebrant search fairly early.
Popular dates can fill quickly, particularly during the busiest wedding months. An experienced celebrant may also have weddings booked well into the future.
Booking early also gives you more time to get to know your celebrant, work through your ceremony ideas and take care of the legal requirements without feeling rushed.
08
Don’t forget the legal side
There are legal requirements your celebrant needs to manage as part of conducting your marriage in Australia.
For example, a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) generally needs to be given to your authorised celebrant at least one month and no more than 18 months before the marriage. There are also specific requirements around identification, declarations, witnesses and the ceremony itself.
Your celebrant should guide you through the legal process so you understand what needs to happen and when. If you’d like to understand the legal and planning process in more detail, you can read about my wedding ceremony process.

Frequently asked questions about wedding celebrant costs
How much does Eliza McAllister charge as a wedding celebrant?
Eliza McAllister’s wedding celebrant fees currently start at $1,000. The set fee covers the celebrant services outlined on my Fees page, including unlimited contact, ceremony planning, a personalised ceremony, vow guidance, pre-wedding support, on-the-day support, professional PA equipment, legal paperwork and post-ceremony follow-up. An Official Marriage Certificate is an optional additional cost.
How much does a wedding celebrant cost in Sydney?
There is no single standard price. Fees vary depending on the celebrant, ceremony, location, experience and inclusions. The most useful comparison is to look at the complete service you’re receiving rather than comparing the headline price alone.
Why are some wedding celebrants more expensive than others?
Experience, demand, location, travel, the amount of planning involved and what is included in the service can all affect the fee. A celebrant who provides extensive personalised planning and on-the-day support may charge more than someone offering a very simple legal ceremony.
Does a wedding celebrant include the legal paperwork?
This depends on the celebrant, so ask before booking. My celebrant service includes managing and lodging the required legal paperwork. The Official Marriage Certificate is an optional additional cost.
Do wedding celebrants charge extra for a rehearsal?
Some do and some don’t. Ask whether a rehearsal or ceremony talk-through is included in the quoted fee. I include a pre-wedding talk-through or rehearsal where required. You can also read more about whether you need a wedding rehearsal.
Is it worth paying more for an experienced wedding celebrant?
Experience can be valuable, particularly when it comes to managing the unexpected. However, the right celebrant isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. You want someone whose experience, personality, communication style and approach feel right for you.
What type of wedding ceremony affects the celebrant cost?
The type of ceremony can affect the level of service and therefore the fee. A full wedding celebrant service involves planning and writing a personalised ceremony, managing the legal requirements and providing on-the-day support. Elopements and simple ceremonies can have different requirements, while a legals-only service is designed for couples who want someone else to lead the personal ceremony while an authorised celebrant manages the legal requirements.
Can we meet our celebrant before booking?
Absolutely. I encourage couples to have an obligation-free initial meeting so we can talk about your plans, answer questions and see whether we’re a good fit.
The takeaway
Look beyond the price
When you’re budgeting for a wedding celebrant, don’t just ask, “How much do you charge?” Ask, “What do we receive for that fee?” Eliza McAllister’s wedding celebrant fees currently start at $1,000, with the fee covering the support, planning, legal requirements and ceremony services outlined on her Fees page. The right celebrant should give you much more than a ceremony on the day — they should give you guidance, reassurance, legal support and a ceremony that feels genuinely like the two of you.
