Can You Get Married Anywhere in NSW? What to Know Before Choosing Your Location

You don’t necessarily need a traditional wedding venue to get married.

You might want to get married at home, in your garden, on a beach, in a park or somewhere else that already means something to you. For many couples, that can make the ceremony feel much more personal than choosing a venue simply because it’s where weddings are usually held.

But there is a difference between being able to get married somewhere and being able to use a particular place for your ceremony. If you’re considering a less traditional location, there are a few things worth thinking about before you settle on it.

The short answer

You don’t have to get married in a traditional wedding venue. Your marriage ceremony can take place somewhere that suits you, provided the legal requirements are met and you have any permission or approval needed to use that particular location.

01

Do you need a wedding venue to get married?

No. A traditional wedding venue is one option, not a legal requirement.

As a celebrant, I’ve worked with couples who wanted their ceremony to happen somewhere that already felt like them: at home, in a garden, beside the water or in another place that had some connection to their relationship.

Sometimes the location is part of your story. Sometimes you simply don’t want a big venue. And sometimes you’ve found a place where you can immediately picture yourselves standing together, with the people you love around you.

The important thing is to separate two questions: Can we legally get married there? and Can we actually use that place for our ceremony? The first is about marriage law. The second may involve the owner, council, land manager or other rules that apply to the location.

02

Getting married at home

There is something lovely about getting married somewhere you already know well.

Your backyard might be where you’ve spent Sunday afternoons together. Your garden might be where you’ve watched your family grow. Or perhaps home simply feels like the most comfortable place to have an intimate wedding.

An at-home ceremony can work beautifully for a small wedding, an intimate celebration with family or a larger gathering where the house and garden become part of the day.

Eliza’s advice

Don’t worry about making your home look like a wedding venue. One of the nicest things about an at-home ceremony is that it doesn’t have to. The familiarity of the place is part of what makes it special.

There are still a few practical things to think about:

  • Where will everyone stand or sit?
  • Will your guests be comfortable if the ceremony takes place outside?
  • Is there enough room for everyone without making the space feel crowded?
  • What happens if it rains or the weather becomes uncomfortable?
  • Can everyone get to the ceremony easily, particularly older guests or anyone with mobility considerations?
  • Will the ceremony be private enough for you to feel comfortable?

03

Getting married on a beach

A beach can be an incredible ceremony setting, particularly if the coastline already has some meaning for you.

But a beach ceremony is one of those situations where the photographs can make it look simpler than it actually is.

Before choosing a particular stretch of sand, think about:

  • Wind: It can affect everything from your ceremony papers to your hair, microphone and guests’ comfort.
  • Noise: Waves are beautiful. Being unable to hear the ceremony isn’t. Consider how sound will carry in an open space.
  • Weather: You need a realistic backup plan rather than simply hoping the forecast behaves.
  • Privacy: A public beach is still a public space. Other people may be walking past, swimming or enjoying the beach while you’re getting married.
  • Access: Think about how your guests will get there, where they will park and how far they need to walk.
  • Timing: Light, heat, tides, crowds and the time of day can all change the experience.
  • Permissions: Check the rules that apply to the particular beach or public land. Being able to legally marry doesn’t automatically mean you have unrestricted use of a public space for an organised ceremony.

Something to consider

A beautiful beach location isn’t necessarily the easiest place for every guest. Before choosing it, picture the actual people who will be standing there with you — not just the two of you and the photographs.

04

What about parks, gardens and other outdoor spaces?

Parks and gardens can sit somewhere between a private home and a traditional venue.

They can give you the feeling of being outdoors without necessarily having the openness of a beach. A garden can also create a natural sense of intimacy, particularly if there is a defined space where your guests can gather.

Again, the practical details matter. Before settling on a location, check:

  1. Who owns or manages the space?
  2. Are ceremonies or organised gatherings permitted?
  3. Do you need permission, a booking or an application?
  4. Are there restrictions on chairs, decorations, music or other equipment?
  5. What facilities are available nearby?
  6. What is your wet-weather option?
  7. Will another event or members of the public be using the space at the same time?

The exact rules will depend on the location, so it’s worth checking with the relevant council, land manager or property owner before making arrangements.

05

What should you think about before choosing your location?

When couples first start looking for somewhere to get married, it’s very easy to start with the view.

I think it’s better to start with the experience.

Does the place actually mean something to you?

It doesn’t have to have a dramatic story behind it. It might simply be somewhere you love spending time together. A location can be meaningful because it feels familiar, peaceful or very much like the two of you.

Will your guests be comfortable?

Think about seating, shade, temperature, walking distances, toilets and accessibility. A location can be perfect for the couple and surprisingly difficult for everyone else.

Can everyone hear what’s happening?

This is particularly important outdoors. Wind, waves, traffic, nearby conversations and other environmental noise can all affect how easily guests hear your ceremony.

What happens if the weather changes?

You don’t need to know exactly what the weather will do weeks or months in advance. You do need to know what you’ll do if it doesn’t cooperate.

How private will the ceremony feel?

Some couples love the idea of being somewhere public and relaxed. Others discover that having strangers walking past during their vows isn’t quite what they imagined. Neither is right or wrong — it’s about knowing what will feel comfortable for you.

Does the location suit the ceremony you actually want?

If you want a very intimate ceremony with just a handful of people, a busy public space may not feel right. If you want a larger celebration with lots of family involved, a tiny backyard might create its own challenges.

06

Does the location change the ceremony itself?

Yes — and this is one of the things I love about ceremonies in less traditional places.

Your location doesn’t just provide a backdrop. It can influence how the ceremony feels, how you enter, where your guests sit, how we use the space and even the rhythm of the ceremony itself.

A ceremony at home doesn’t need to feel like a smaller version of a hotel wedding. A beach ceremony doesn’t need to become a generic “beach wedding”. And a garden ceremony doesn’t need to follow the same structure as every other garden wedding.

A note from Eliza

I like thinking about the location as part of the story rather than something that dictates the ceremony. The place should help the ceremony feel like yours, not make you feel like you have to perform a particular kind of wedding.

That’s also where having a celebrant who gets to know you can make a difference. The ceremony can be shaped around the two of you, the people you’ve invited and the place you’ve chosen.

You can read about my ceremony process if you’d like to see how that works.

07

What about getting married somewhere in the Northern Beaches?

If you’re planning a wedding around the Northern Beaches, you have a particularly wide range of possibilities.

You might picture yourselves beside the ocean, somewhere around Pittwater, in a garden, at home or at one of the area’s established wedding venues. The right choice depends less on what looks like a wedding location and more on what you want the day to feel like.

If you’re looking for specific places around the Northern Beaches, I’ve put together a separate guide to Northern Beaches wedding venues and ceremony locations. This article is really about the bigger question: what kind of place is right for us?

08

Can you get married somewhere private?

Yes. A private home, garden or other private property can be a wonderful setting for a wedding ceremony, provided the owner is happy for the ceremony to take place there and any relevant local requirements are met.

This can be particularly lovely if the property has some personal connection to you. It also gives you more control over the environment than a public location, although you’ll still want to think about practical things like parking, access, neighbours, toilets, weather and where everyone will gather.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get married anywhere in NSW?

You don’t have to get married in a traditional wedding venue. However, the particular location still needs to be suitable for the ceremony and you may need permission or approval to use a public or privately owned space. Your authorised celebrant can also help you understand the legal requirements for the marriage itself.

Can you get married at home?

Yes. An at-home wedding can be a beautiful option for couples who want something intimate, relaxed and personal. You’ll still need to meet the normal legal requirements for getting married, and it’s worth thinking through the practical setup for your guests and ceremony.

Can you get married on a beach?

A beach can be used as a wedding ceremony setting, but don’t assume every beach can simply be booked or used however you like. Check the rules that apply to the particular beach and allow for practical issues such as weather, wind, access, privacy and noise.

Do you need permission to get married in a park?

It depends on the particular park and the authority responsible for it. Public spaces can have their own rules around ceremonies, bookings, gatherings, equipment and exclusive use, so check with the relevant council or land manager before making arrangements.

Does a wedding location have to be licensed?

No. Australian marriage law does not require you to choose a licensed wedding venue. The important legal requirements relate to the people getting married, the authorised celebrant, the ceremony and the required documentation. The location may have separate rules or permissions that you need to deal with.

The takeaway

You don’t need a traditional venue to have a meaningful wedding.

Home, beach, garden, park or somewhere else that matters to you can all create a wonderful setting for a ceremony. The trick is to look beyond the photographs and think about how the place will actually work for you and your guests. Check the permissions, think about the weather and practicalities, and then ask yourself the most important question: does this place feel like us?
